How to read a COA

A certificate of analysis is a test report for one specific lot. Most of what people do with COAs — glance at a purity number, feel reassured — skips the parts that actually carry information.

Worth stating up front: this site's publisher sells peptides — so everything below applies to the publisher's own certificates too. Section 08 is about holding them to it. For research use only.

  5. 06What the certificate does not say. If a line isn't there, assume it wasn't tested.

01A COA describes a lot, not a product

It is the result of tests run on material from one particular batch on one particular day. It says nothing about the batch before it or the batch after it.

"Our product is 99% pure" is a marketing claim about a product line. A COA is a document about the specific material in your hand — or it's nothing at all.

02First check: does the lot match?

Find the lot or batch number on the certificate. Find the lot number on your vial. They have to be the same string.

If they don't match, or the vial has no lot number on it, the document tells you nothing about what you have. This is the single most skipped step, and it invalidates everything after it.

03Who ran the test

Look for a named laboratory, a report date, and the method used. A real report is traceable to whoever performed it.

"Third-party tested" written on a website is a phrase. A lab's name, method, and date on a report is a claim someone can be held to. They are not the same thing, and only one of them is a COA.

In-house testing isn't automatically worthless — but it's the vendor testing their own material, and it should be labeled as what it is.

04Purity, via HPLC

HPLC separates what's in the sample and measures the area of each peak. Purity is reported as the target peak's share of the total peak area at a given wavelength.

What that tells you: of the material the detector saw, this fraction was the target peptide.

What it does not tell you: how much peptide is in the vial by mass, how much of the vial's weight is water and counter-ions rather than peptide (net peptide content, reported separately when it's reported at all), or whether the contents are sterile.

05Identity, via mass spectrometry

MS reports an observed mass against the theoretical mass for the sequence. That's the check on whether the molecule is the one named on the label.

The two tests answer different questions, and you need both:

06What a COA usually doesn't cover

Unless a line item explicitly says otherwise, assume none of these were tested: sterility, bacterial endotoxin, residual solvents from synthesis, heavy metals, and net peptide content.

A high purity number and a matching mass say nothing about any of them. This is the most common way a certificate gets over-read — it's treated as a general safety document when it's a narrow analytical one.

So: pull the COA for your lot, match the lot number, find the lab and the method, look at the trace, and see whether identity and purity are both there. If a certificate from VioPure fails any of those checks, it fails — publishing this guide doesn't earn VioPure's paperwork an exemption from it.
